Essentially diamonds are noted as a very clear, very hard stone that gives you radiance and brilliance unmatched by any other stone. Included within the radiance is the dispersion of rays of color. The colors come from refraction of the incoming beams of light, be they from the sun or from artificial light. The process of refraction reflects the light beam back at the observer with different wave lengths. All colors of light have their own wave lengths different from other colors and from the original white light. Ultimately, the way the diamond handles light is so important that numerous measures or features of the diamond are used to quantify the value of each stone.
But even within size, prices vary significantly depending on quality. You want as little as possible interfering with the color refraction. The three factors affecting quality are clarity, color and cut.
