Diamond Carats
Before you worry about value measures, if you are considering acquiring a diamond, you should decide on the approximate size and shape you are interested in. The size measure is called the carat. Like feet are subdivided into inches, carats are subdivided into 100 points. A one carat stone is a frequent choice for a center stone or single diamond. A center stone is often anything from 1/3 carat (33 points) to 3+ carats. Size is a major factor in determining price. Unlike many produces which are cheaper in bulk, the larger the stone the more it will cost per carat, i.e. per point. In other words a 1 carat stone can cost more than twice what a ½ carat stone costs. Continuing that analogy, the 2 carat stone might cost 3-5 times the cost of 1 carat stone. So, in order to focus on diamond size, you should determine an approximate dollar range you are willing to spend
